Where's the PASSION?

Hannah Montana is in town tonight. (in case you haven't heard)
The question that came up in our staff devotions today is this: "How is it that people go so extremely nuts over some 14 year old girl who sings on a stage, but won't dare tell their neighbor about the love that Jesus Christ has for them?"

Ever thought about that? It drives me absolutely nuts! Now don't get me wrong, I don't hate Hannah Montana. My daughter is going to the show. They're going to have a ton of fun! But it will be over in a couple of hours. We'll wake up tomorrow, and go back about our daily routine. In 5 years will we even remember it?

Our eternity, and that of our friends and neighbors is at stake. Why don't we get as excited about telling them about Jesus? I think it comes down to this: PASSION.

We get emotional about whatever we are passionate about. When it comes to Christ, we somehow muster up enough passion to sing a few well written worship songs on Sunday morning, and maybe even Wednesday night. But then we leave church behind and go and try to fill the void in our lives with the emotional highs we get from big shows and entertainment.

What will it take for Christians to become passionate about Jesus? I don't know. I do know this: where your treasure is there your heart is also. Where your treasure is, there is your passion. What are you passionate about? Do your neighbors know?

Because too many preachers tell us what to do, not how to do it. On the other hand, too many people wait for the preacher to tell them what to do, only to get annoyed and upset bacause they will be inconvenienced if they do follow the preachers direction. It is difficult to TELL your neighbor that God loves them, if you are not SHOWING them the same love.

I had the opportunity to attend the Panthers game this last Sunday. Since the game was nothing to write home about let me share a little of the experience.
The stadium seats about 73 thousand people. It was technically a sold out game but about 20 thousand people didn't even show up. Lost Passion.
As the 4th quarter was underway part of the crowd starting booing our quarterback when he came on the field and started chanting "We want Moore!" (the next in line QB). Misdirected Passion.

I see in this the church so often. As much as people don't have passion as Geoffrey discussed there are two other issues as well:

Lost Passion - those who are burned out because the are running under their own power instead of the power of the Spirit. Like the fans who don't show up they just don't care, have given up, or have just been turned off by something that has or hasn't happened.

Misdirected Passion - Like some of the people Rob Singleton has been talking about in his blog people have taken what passion they have and directed it to things they see wrong or things they would do differently. Like the fans who turn on the coaches and the players they turn on the staff and members of the church and focus on their grievances instead of focusing on the mission.

So no passion is an issue so is Lost Passion and Misdirected Passion.

This doesn't really have to do specifically with this post, but I just wanted to let you know that I love your blog. You write so many things that are poignant for me, and I'm really learning a lot. Thanks for posting them!
